A driveway is usually the single largest hard surface on a property — and the one that takes the most direct hit from Irish weather. Moss, algae, oil staining and years of grime do not just affect how a property looks; on block paving in particular, untreated moss growth works into the joint sand and gradually loosens the blocks themselves.
After over 20 years of cleaning driveways across Dublin, the one thing we have learned is that driveway cleaning is not one job — it's three or four different jobs depending on the surface. Block paving, tarmac, poured concrete and resin-bound surfaces each respond differently to pressure, and each needs a different cleaning approach to get right. Treating them all the same way is the single biggest cause of driveway damage we see when we inspect jobs done elsewhere — stripped joint sand, dulled tarmac, or surface pitting on concrete from excessive pressure.
At Reflect General Maintenance, we assess your driveway's surface type before we start, not after something goes wrong. Call 089 412 2011 for a free, no-obligation quote. For wider guidance on property upkeep in Dublin, Dublin City Council provides useful information for homeowners and landlords.
Block paving driveway — chemical treatment applied, scrubbed and pressure washed.
Before
AfterThe most common driveway type on Dublin properties built since the 1990s, especially across new-build estates in North Dublin. Moss and algae take hold in the joint sand between blocks — this is where the real damage happens, not just on the visible surface. We clean the full block face and clear the joints properly, then top up jointing sand where needed to keep blocks locked in place and stop weed growth returning.
Tarmac surfaces are common on older Dublin properties and require lower pressure than block paving — push too hard and you strip the bitumen surface dressing, leaving a patchy, dulled finish that actually looks worse than before cleaning. We use a controlled approach specifically calibrated for tarmac to lift dirt and oil staining without damaging the surface.
Poured and stamped concrete develop deep black algae staining over time, particularly in shaded spots. For heavily stained concrete, we use a hot wash technique that lifts ingrained staining standard cold-water cleaning cannot remove.
Increasingly common on newer Dublin properties. Resin-bound surfaces need gentler treatment than traditional paving — excessive pressure can damage the resin binding. We use the correct lower-pressure setting to clean effectively without compromising the surface.
Oil and fuel stains from cars do not respond to standard cleaning — pressure washing alone often just spreads the stain rather than removing it. We treat oil stains with a dedicated degreaser before the main clean, breaking down the stain so it lifts properly rather than smearing across the surface. This is a step many driveway cleaners skip — and it's the difference between a driveway that looks properly clean versus one with a faint oil shadow still visible afterward.
A few simple habits make a real difference between needing a clean every 12 months versus every 6:
Sweep regularly to stop organic debris building up in joints, which is where moss growth actually starts.
Avoid harsh DIY chemicals — many bleach-based products damage block paving jointing and discolour tarmac over time.
Address shaded areas separately — north-facing sections under trees or walls regrow algae faster and may need a touch-up clean between full visits.
Consider sealing after cleaning — a sealant on block paving locks in jointing sand and makes future cleans faster and more effective.
We do not just point a pressure washer and leave. Every driveway cleaning job at Reflect includes:
Full inspection of the surface and condition before starting — surface type, staining, damage noted.
Chemical treatment applied where needed — breaks down moss, algae and deep-set staining before washing.
Professional pressure washing at the correct PSI for your specific driveway surface type.
Clearing of joints, edges and borders — the detail work that separates a proper job from a quick wash.
Oil stain treatment on tarmac and concrete where required.
Full clean-up on completion — we leave your property tidy every time.
A driveway that looks genuinely restored — not just wet and slightly cleaner. We take pride in the finish on every job.

Block paving, tarmac, concrete and resin-bound surfaces are not interchangeable — each needs a different pressure setting and technique. We assess first, every time.
We use a dedicated degreaser process before pressure washing, not a quick blast that just spreads the stain.
We're honest about when sealing would extend the life of your clean — and can point you to a trusted specialist if you want it done.
From new-build block paving estates in Swords to older tarmac driveways across the city, we've seen — and correctly cleaned — almost every surface type Dublin has.
For concrete with deep-set algae or grime that cold water alone won't shift, we carry hot wash equipment most local cleaners don't.
Every job insured. We inspect and quote at no charge, with no obligation to proceed.
"Kirk has been to my house twice doing work. The first time he cleaned all the gutters and fascia and did an excellent job. So we got him back to the windows. Would 10/10 recommend him."

North Dublin's newer estates — particularly across Blanchardstown, Castleknock, Swords and Portmarnock — are dominated by block paving driveways, typically installed within the last 15–20 years. These surfaces respond very well to proper cleaning and rejuvenate close to their original appearance when treated correctly.
Older areas including Balbriggan and Rush have a higher mix of tarmac driveways, which need the gentler, controlled approach we use to avoid surface stripping. We also clean driveways across South Dublin, including Lucan, Tallaght and Sandyford.
With Ireland's high annual rainfall, driveways rarely get long enough dry spells to naturally shed algae growth — which is why a proper clean makes such a visible, lasting difference.
