Pergola questions, answered.

Do I need planning permission for a pergola in Ireland? +

In most cases a pergola falls under exempt development in Ireland, no planning permission needed, provided it is less than 25 square metres, sits to the rear of the house, and doesn't cover more than half your garden. Fully enclosed or roofed structures may require a conversation with your local authority. We'll advise you on your specific situation during the free site visit.

How much does a pergola cost in Ireland? +

Every pergola is custom built, so the price depends on the size, materials and style you choose. We visit your garden first, take measurements, and give you a fixed written quote, completely free with no obligation. Timber freestanding pergolas are the most affordable option; lean-to and roofed bioclimatic designs cost more. No hidden fees, ever.

What is the difference between a pergola and a gazebo? +

A pergola is an open-sided structure with a slatted or open roof, ideal for climbing plants, canopies and louvred panels. A gazebo is a fully enclosed standalone structure with a solid roof and walls. Pergolas suit gardens where you want light and air with some shade; a gazebo gives full shelter. We can advise which suits your space and budget during the site visit.

What is a bioclimatic or louvred pergola? +

A bioclimatic pergola has motorised aluminium louvres in the roof that rotate to control light, ventilation and rain, fully open on a sunny day, watertight when the weather turns, at the touch of a button. They're the most versatile roofed pergola option and ideal for the Irish climate where the weather can change at a moment's notice.

What is the best material for a pergola in Ireland? +

Pressure-treated softwood and hardwoods like oak and cedar look beautiful and suit traditional gardens, but need treating every two to three years. Powder-coated aluminium is virtually maintenance-free, won't rot or warp in wet Irish weather, and suits modern gardens. We supply both and will recommend what suits your garden style and long-term budget.

How long does a timber pergola last? +

A well-built and regularly maintained timber pergola will last 15 to 25 years or more. Pressure-treated softwood needs treating every 2–3 years; hardwoods like oak or iroko require less maintenance. Powder-coated aluminium pergolas are effectively maintenance-free and can easily last 30 or more years.

Can you build a lean-to pergola attached directly to my house? +

Yes, we use specialist wall brackets and fixings designed for masonry, brick and render. Before attaching anything, we check your roof lines, fascia, gutters and drainage to make sure the installation is clean and watertight with no risk of damp or damage to your home.

Do you cover areas outside Dublin? +

Our core coverage is all of Dublin, and we regularly take on pergola jobs in Kildare, Meath, Wicklow and surrounding counties for the right project. Call or WhatsApp us with your location and we'll let you know straight away, turnaround is fast.
